The internet was practically built on cat memes, so what's so special about #CatPerson trending on Twitter this weekend?
Well, it's a rare phenomenon, one that kind of gives us butterflies in our stomachs. You see, everyone (everyone!) has read a short story published in The New Yorker and it has caused such a stir that it's almost magical in the nostalgic way a piece of fiction has risen to public conversation.
Written by Kristen Roupenian and published online and in the December 11th issue of the magazine, "Cat Person" depicts some painfully real truths about the feminine experience, from dating to sex to feelings of nagging obligation and guilt. It's uncomfortable and relatable. It, like any good work of literature, has garnered praise and criticism (some of it thoughtful, some of it simply angry reactions from men). While the subject matter is not particularly revolutionary or shocking, it's the mundanity of it that makes it such a must-read.
If you want to engage in some smart water cooler talk this Monday, we suggest you bookmark it ASAP.
