How is New York Pilates different from other studios?

HA: So what happens in our classes is definitely not the same routine that happens every time, it's a lot of variation, and we really work with our teachers to be creative and develop new exercises and variations. And within that framework it's really important to us that the exercises are functional. So a creative exercise that doesn't have a functional purpose is a no-go. That doesn't work for us. We wanted to be creative and entertaining, but then as you're doing it it has a very direct feeling. So 'I really feel my back working here' or 'I really feel my abdominals working here.' We do it in lots of different shapes or positions or opposing gravity or with resistance, so that you're using your muscles in a complex and complete way. One big difference is the music. A really classical pilates studio does not play music at all. In more traditional yoga you don't listen to music, I think it's a little bit more of an old-fashioned thing. Music is a very important component of what we're up to. We've been working with DJs, we set a specific tone and we have DJs who are making playlists for us. So that's really fun. New York Pilates
