Have you ever sat in on or tried your hand at the creation of traditional art?
Well, most of the tribal art that I'm looking for wouldn't have been created in the last hundred years, but I'm an artist myself, a painter--well, I was--and when I was living with the hunter gatherers, I would take canvases with me and paint just to kill time when you're out there, you know? And one day, the hunter gatherers started painting with me, and all of a sudden we started doing these insane, collaborative paintings. And I would be like, 'Oh, what's that that you drew?' and they'd say 'That's the buffalo that killed my father,' and then that would lead to a story. By painting and art, I was allowed to get into their history. If I was just with them, they wouldn't have revealed, or I wouldn't have known how to ask them about their spirituality and stuff. So art allowed me to communicate with them on a deeper level. So I've shared that modern, collaborative creativity with them. But in the sense of making a figure? No, those people are long gone. No one could even make a figure I'd be interested in. [Photo via]
