What drew you to Africa? Is this when you first became interested in tribal art?
Well, my sister was working as a fashion editor for Harper's Bazaar, and they did a photo shoot in Africa. So she was speaking to the safari operator where she did the photo shoot, and she's like, 'My brother, he's 20 years old, he would love to do safaris!' The next summer, I was getting ready to finish school, and I just took off and worked for him and fell in love with Tanzania. My mother worked in a museum, and the head of Oceanic and African art lived across the hall from us, so I had grown up seeing African art. I was always going to the big shops and places and asking about statues and masks and villages, so it all sort of worked together. So then, for the next 20-year period, I'd go to Africa, collect art, come back, and then I started buying from collections and things like that. Then I was an author and I wrote several books.
