A very lucky Upper West Side doorman got a car from a tenant once, but you don't need to be quite as extravagant with your holiday tipping.Carlos Pellecier, who has been the doorman at 1380 Riverside Drive for almost 30 years, has received pajamas, gloves, scarves, sweaters, a leather jacket, and even a car from his grateful tenants. These are great gifts if you know your doorman really well, or if you are rich enough to give away cars (and therefore named Oprah Winfrey).
These elaborate gifts are not viable for everyone (Mr.Wong, the doorman at our GofG offices, would probably be completely frightened if we gifted him pajamas, bless his heart). So what is an appropriate monetary tip?
