Gallery 721 @ Sobro, the largest artist-owned gallery ever established in the South Bronx, held its grand opening celebration last Thursday evening. Attendees partied the night away in the newly renovated 5,000 square foot gallery space and roofdeck, now filled with the eye-popping paintings of artist DM Weil.
Half the proceeds from all art sales Thursday night went to support Manger-Weil House, the orphanage in Mekelle, Ethiopia that DM Weil and her family helped to start. Additional funds were raised with a live raffle drawing.
There was barely a dry eye in the house after the screening of Manhattan To Mekelle, a documentary film (and 2008 Woodstock Film Festival selection) about Manger-Weil House written and directed by Samara Manger-Weil (DM Weil's teenage daughter).
Noted jazz pianist Harold O'Neal tickled the keys of the fully restored 1911 Grotrian piano.
After eating, drinking and dancing the night away, everyone left Gallery 721 @ Sobro with the satisfaction of knowing that over $1,000 had been raised for Manger-Weil House.
