Launched in 2020 by Brother Vellies founder Aurora James, the Fifteen Percent Pledge is a non-profit and initiative that encourages retailers to commit 15% of their shelf space to Black-owned businesses. This season, luxury e-commerce platform Moda Operandi is answering the call by putting a spotlight on the Black designers making major waves in the fashion industry.
Moda's latest curated trunkshow, presented in partnership with James and the Fifteen Percent Pledge, is giving consumers the chance to discover new favorites while putting their purchasing power towards social equity.
"I know firsthand the systemic barriers that Black business owners face in trying to increase their exposure to the larger retail market," says James. "Collaborations like these are not only crucial for building brand visibility, but are an important step to push the industry forward by challenging how corporations approach supporting Black businesses long term. Our partnership with Moda Operandi is rooted in the mutual desire to create a sustainable ecosystem for Black entrepreneurs, all while showcasing their incredible products and designs along the way."
From now through April 7th, you can peruse and pre-order off-the-runway pieces from brands including Sukeina, Dur Doux, Sunni Sunni, Anonlychild, Harwell Godfrey, Head of State, Agbobly, and James's own Brother Vellies, to instantly upgrade your spring wardrobe. Beyond supporting the designers themselves, 5% of the trunkshow proceeds will also benefit the organization and its mission towards social and economic justice.
