Like many industries, there is a complete lack of pay transparency in the realm of media. In moments of upset, the disparity between coworkers compensation have been slightly revealed.
Following revelations and accusations of racial salary inequity, staff members of Condé Nast have started a Salary Transparency Spreadsheet, publishing their annal income numbers and cataloguing every detail that could possibly explain how the company would have arrived at such a number - from job title and years of experience, to gender, race and sexual orientation.
There's also a section where employees can leave notes, in which many relate stories of their unrealized promises of a bonus, disappointing promotions, and below market pay.
So far 314 staff members have shared their information on the document. Hopefully this move will finally push Condé and it's fellow publishers such as Hearst, Time and so forth, to hold themselves accountable to their own systemic prejudices.
