Simone Manuel
In Rio, Manuel got the United States its first gold medal in the women's 100-meter freestyle in decades, and was the first African-American woman to win a gold medal in an individual swimming event for the United States.
"You have to work hard and be pretty smart to get into a school like this," Manuel told USA Swimming. "I wanted to be in this atmosphere and challenge myself."
Manuel has been attending Stanford since 2014. Her roommate? Katie Ledecky.
