This year's Art in Focus program, produced by Rockefeller Center and Art Production Fund, is off to a colorful start!
The first of five separate installations to be unveiled throughout 2022, Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary artist Max Colby's pieces are a breath of fresh air for the city center hub.
For the coming months, tens of her sculptures and murals, including a 125-foot mural in the concourse of 45 Rockefeller Plaza, will be peppered throughout the Rockefeller Center campus. One mesmerizing scene after the next, the vibrant works incorporate Colby's penchant for intricate bead work and fascination with historical Crewel embroidery.
“Activating Rockefeller Center is such a special opportunity," shares Colby. "I’ve long admired its Art Deco architecture but there’s also a wonderful irony in the coupling – Rockefeller Center is home to many sites of American cultural production, popular television, shopping, etc. which reflect conversations my work engages with. I’m delighted to offer this work to the public and provide unique opportunities for the generation of new, joyous experiences.”
