Hedy Klineman, Ancestral Spirits, African-American Portraits
Combining aspects of pop art and traditional tribal art, Hedy Klineman's unique exhibition at Smart Clothes Gallery could be linked back to two major events in her life, which both revolved around receiving gifts. The first occurred in the 1980s, when Andy Warhol gave the artist a pair of his glasses, allowing her to metaphorically "see through his eyes." The second occurred years later when she was presented with an African mask on her birthday, which she also wore to experience a new perspective. She captured the action in a silkscreen portrait, launching the series on view now.
