8. New York City Opera Closes its doors After a huge contract dispute with unionized musicians and management, the New York City Opera has closed its doors. Struggling with increasing expenses and decreasing ticket sales, George Steel, the general manager and artistic director, said the unions did not understand that the company could only be saved if employee contracts were scaled back. Risa Heller, a spokeswoman for NYCO said,
"Rehearsals are canceled until we have a deal. We are taking this one day at a time."
