Super Bowl XXVI, 1992
Performers: Gloria Estefan, Olympic Figure skaters Brian Boitano & Dorothy Hamill, 1980 Olympic hockey team
Winter magic! In an attempt to commemorate the 1992 Winter Olympics, this halftime show included figure skaters Brian Boitano and Dorothy Hamill skating on a tiny ice snowflakes on different parts of the field. Then snowmobiles begin whirring over Astroturf, a hockey team jogs around the field, and Gloria Estefan stands on top of a bearded Statue of Liberty. When talk of figure skating as the entertainment between an event of enormous, aggressive men mauling one another like animals, how did no one step in and say, "there's no place for Ice Capades at the Super Bowl"? From the truly puzzling concept right down to Lady Liberty sporting facial hair, the entire winter wonderland of confusion was so wrong.
