Mayor Villaraigosa's call to Angelenos to join the May Day march was heard loud and clear, as over 60,000 congregated in downtown L.A. on Saturday to protest Arizona's new immigration law.
The crowd included people of all different ethnicities who proudly waved flags of red, white, and blue to show their loyalty to the U.S. and marched the streets of downtown. Although law enforcement was on full deployment for crowd control and to diffuse any unruly or riotous behavior that might arise, the march maintained a peaceful and positive energy.
One of the immigration policy of Arizona's most prominent opponents, Cardinal Roger Mahoney, spoke to the rallying crowd and demanded Arizona's legislatures to explicate what qualifies "reasonable suspicion" in an individual as undocumented. "They can't" Mahoney added, "because you'd come up with 'brown skin, black hair and listens to ranchera music.'"
