Jeff Mangum at Orpheum Theatre
Jeff Mangum is like the J.D. Salinger of indie rock, having released a universally beloved and extremely influential masterwork relatively early and then promptly vanished into self-imposed exile. But while we've generally reconciled ourselves to the fact that we won't see any more of Salinger's work until he passes, there are signs that Mangum's getting back into the world, culminating in two widely credited (and, at his request, unfilmed) performances at Coachella and now this follow-up show at the Orpheum. Given the incongruity of the Coachella stage with his haunting melodies and grand-but-intimate sounds, the gorgeous and nostalgia-soaked Orpheum may be the best place of all to see him. [Details]
