John O'Groats
One of the real joys of L.A. is discovering the unpretentious, non-modernized institutions that have survived amidst the sea of shmancy, production-designed restaurants and bars simply by being awesome. And while Pico mainstay John O'Groats has undergone a few expansions from the days when there were only 4-5 tables, it certainly hasn't lost its no-frills charm, nor has the legendary breakfast menu been watered down at all. Buttermilk pancakes, buckwheat pancakes, pumpkin pancakes, and several other options reign supreme here, and since it's a West L.A. bar, nobody's going to judge you if you want a little beer to wash it down with. For you Valley-dwellers, there's also a (relatively) brand-new Encino location. John O'Groats 10516 Pico Boulevard, West LA 16120 Ventura Boulevard, Encino www.ogroatsrestaurant.com
