Slide #1
Sound City recording studio in Van Nuys has played a significant role in the history of rock, having been the site of recordings for the likes of Nirvana, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fleetwood Mac to name a few. With Sound City incorporated in 1969, holding the premiere of Dave Grohl's documentary on the famous recording studio at Cinerama Dome, also opened in the 60s, seemed fitting for the Thursday night event. In his directorial debut, Sound City: Real to Reel, Grohl wrangles a roster of rock 'n' roll A-listers like Mick Fleetwood, Tom Petty, Trent Reznor and Rivers Cuomo among others, to open up about the recording machine.
Immediately following the premiere was the accompanying all-star Sound City Players concert at the Hollywood Palladium. There, Stevie Nicks, Rick Springfield, John Fogerty, Queens of the Stone Age's Chris Goss, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's Robert Levon Been, Rage Against the Machine's Brad Wilk, Fear's Lee Ving, Slipknot's Corey Taylor, Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen, the Foo Fighters and Nirvana members all hit the stage, to commemorate a film that not only pays tribute to the studio, but also, as the Chicagoist puts it, "reaches beyond simple history to discover music's heart."
The night was also filled with some surprise guests, including Joan Jett. Check out our slideshow of photos where a veritable who's who of rock and roll showed up to honor their fellow musician and a landmark of Los Angeles recording history.
