The "main event' that all of these separate parties lead up to is a 4-day parade/dance party/competition at the Sambadrome, where dancers from various Samba schools (large groups of performers) parade alongside extraordinarily elaborate floats, accompanied by their own band, entourage and full production team. Preparing for the Sambadrome is a year-round job, full-time for many, and the competition, which is judged on everything from the quality of music to the "flow" of the parade, is taken extremely seriously, or at least as seriously as you can take people in these outfits.
