Interview

"The biggest week of my life starts today," tweeted Tupac Martir (@tmartir) on January 9th. It's now Sunday 15th - the day after I saw Martir’s first ever fully staged multidisciplinary work performed in front of a buzzing audience, all of which showing support by wearing especially made Mexican broaches that signify luck. After the show, I managed to catch up with Martir. I was immediately captivated by his humble and unaffected demeanor. He was eager to hear my thoughts on the production he calls "his baby" and rightly so – after the last three years of blood, sweat and many, many tears. (Last night being no exception to the tears.) You began the week with the tweet: ‘The biggest week of my life starts today.’ How has it been and how are you feeling now? I’m a mess! (laughs) I’ve hardly slept. It’s been three years in the making and I’m feeling very emotional right now. I’ve cried so many times. It’s nerve-wracking waiting to see if people ‘get it’ and what the reviews will be like. I have to wait and see.. Do you have plans for another production? I’m already working on my second. It’s the same kind of thing but different... Why is the show in London? The first three shows will act as a showcase, hence we wanted to show it in a place were it will be easier for people from all over the world. It is also a Mecca for theatre, dance, arts, film, etc so it felt like the right place to perform a show like this. Martir’s overall state is one of high emotion and exhaustion. I can smell the beer on his breath, no doubt a bunker for the nerves and fuel for the severe lack of sleep. He is however, full of spirit, gratitude and most importantly, life. [Photos via, via]
