[Photo from BeckBones] If you thought Earth Day was huge, imagine what World Environment Day (WED) is like. Tomorrow, June 5, is officially world environment day, and you can be sure that people everywhere will be celebrating the environment. WED was created by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to "stimulate awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and public action."
Out here in the Hamptons, the environment at times has caused a hindrance to events such as the Piping Plover vs. Fireworks incident. However, without environmental protection and land preservation of our dunes, beaches, and ocean waters, the Hamptons would not be nearly what it is today. So in celebration of WED, GofG Hamptons Team has some tips you can do to improve your favorite summer spot, The Hamptons.
1. REUSE YOUR PLASTIC BAGS - statistics show that the average american produces 4 pounds of trash a day, and 1,460 pounds of trash per year. These statistics are seriously scary, so as a way of reducing your trash production reuse your plastic bags or buy a reusable canvas-esque bag.
2. BUY LOCAL OR ORGANIC PRODUCE- with all the farmers' markets out here in the Hamptons, there should be no reason you are not buying at least some of your produce from local East End farmers. Plus the food is fresher, tastes better, and you will be sure to get rave reviews from your dinner guests.
3. RECYCLE CARDBOARD, CANS, & PLASTIC - all the plastic and non biodegradable garbage that reaches the world's oceans has gradually come together to form what is known as The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. This garbage patch covers approximately the size of Texas, stretches from coast of Cali to Japan and contains 3.5 million tons of trash. Recycle people!
4. CARPOOL - while heading out on the weekends to one of the numerous hotspots in the Hamptons consider carpooling to: Pink Elephant, Georgica, Lily Pond, AXE Lounge and The Surf Lodge to list a few. Not only are you reducing your carbon footprint, making your trip out for the night safer, but who doesn't want to make a few extra friends?
