Turbans

Turbans
Women in Europe during the 1940s wore turbans to hide their oily hair. When picturing the chic Parisian or Italian women, we might think of Sophia Loren or Catherine Deneuve in a fur coat, with a turban and sunglasses. Nothing more sophisticated, chic and elegant than that, right? Sorry to disappoint you. The turban, as well as the fur coat, fall under the french expression "cache-misère," or "hide the misery." Women would hide behind turbans because of a lack of hygienic supplies and fancy clothing. The post WWII era was marked by poverty, thus soap and make-up were scarce. What the turban really hid what was probably smelly, dirty strands of hair. [Photo via]
