Daily Style Phile: The Hard-Partying Guidos & Guidettes Of Jersey Shore

[ [By Rebecca Martin and the editors of Wetpaint Entertainment, experts on everything Jersey Shore] GQ recently ranked the Jersey Shore as #19 on its list of the 40 Worst-Dressed Places in America, in large part because of MTV's smash hit Jersey Shore. But we're not totally convinced. Sure, the guido style popularized by the cast is frequently questionable, but we have a soft spot for their brazenly asset-flaunting choices. At some point, trashy turns the bend and becomes artful again — or maybe we've just been brainwashed by their day-glo skin.

Either way, the guys and gals of Jersey Shore are trendsetters, and they were rocking some unique new styles while filming Season 4 in Florence. We spotted three trends that are most likely to hit the small screen when Jersey Shore premieres on August 4, 2011.

Bio

The cast of Jersey Shore rose to fame in 2009 for their crazy antics on the hit MTV reality show, Jersey Shore, where they got drunk and said brilliantly stupid things for an entire summer. Since then, the cast has snagged coveted DJing gigs, notably less-coveted acting roles, more spin-offs than you can shake a grenade whistle at, and the hearts and minds of millions of Americans. And, oh yeah, they filmed another three seasons of their hit show. These crazy kids are everywhere, and if they have anything to say about it, they're here to stay.

Deep Tee Monsters

There was one trend every guido agreed on this summer: Bright t-shirts with big graphics. Like a grown-up version of those Hot Topic shirts with snarky comments (every middle-school boy owns at least one), these tees make a statement while remaining very casual — an essential feature of every Jersey outfit, even when cruising the cobbled streets of Florence. And thanks to sites like Threadless.com, graphic tees are actually — dare we say — legitimately cool these days. As Wetpaint Entertainment's Assistant Photo Editor Alissa Kombert points out, "Vinny seems to be straying from the guido look and going more for the NYC hipster vibe these days, with his Lipmo Threads t-shirt and wayfarer sunglasses." Good job, boys.

The Girls Get Floppy

Hats are an essential part of summer fashion, and in Italy the girls of the shore were all about over-sized sunhats, which is probably the most practical trend the guidettes have ever embraced. As Wetpaint Entertainment Editor Sam Lansky says, "The girls of Jersey Shore love style for style's sake, but these over-sized hats are a canny marriage of fashion and function." From big and floppy to the more classically-styled, nothing keeps the blaring sun off your face like a big hat. It's almost like the girls realized there is such a thing as too much tanning.

Unfortunately, this stroke of good sense was a momentary aberration: "The sun hats definitely give the Jersey Shore girls a classier look, but we think it was just a Florence-inspired phase — the girls are back in Seaside, and back to their trucker hats," Kombert warns. We'll have to enjoy it while it lasts.

Furry Feet All Year Round

Snooki loves her mukluks, and she brought her favorite fuzzy monstrosities with her to the Motherland. And then she wore them everywhere. She's a one-woman trendsetter, for better or, mostly, for worse. "In winter, these are borderline acceptable," Kombert says. "But in summer... Well, I’m shvitzing at the thought." So was Italy, apparently; rumor has it that the boots were the cause of Snooki's run-in with a Gypsy. On the other hand, there is something delightfully flippant about pairing masses of faux fur on your feet with itty-bitty shorts and skirts. It's not high fashion, but it's so weird it might as well be.
