Alexis Portilla: Particles
14. Alexis Portilla: Particles
Alexis states that he is always searching for the dominant characteristics or the basic identity for a new body of work. The vocabulary of shapes and images within his memory are a guide to begin all new work. Regardless of media or perceived subject matter, this approach allows him to gain access to the underlying architecture of a painting. Sometimes he explores atmosphere and color with minimal imagery, other times he uses line and deeply layered mark making. For Alexis, his goal is not to focus on any one mode in a particular body of work, but to let the natural development of the piece describe the interplay between all modes of visual expression.
