Ai Weiwei, "Sunflower Seeds"
Like sunflower seeds? How about
five tons of them?
First debuted at the Tate Modern in 2010, each of these millions of seeds is actually a miniature porcelain sculpture, hand-painted and crafted by artisans in northern China (the sunflower was a common metaphor for The People during China's Cultural Revolution).
Now trans-planted to New York's Mary Boone Gallery, this exhibition by Ai Weiwer isn't just for the birds, but rather a commentary on "the role of the individual versus the masses, and China’s long history of labor intensive production and export."
Through February 4 at Mary Boone Gallery, 541 W 24th Street. For more information, go HERE.
